The Great Breach of 2012 & The Kickstarter to Rebuild EN World!

vbulletin4_logoThose of you who regularly visit my site know that for the past couple years I’ve been doing weekly reviews over at EN World News.  Looking back, I find that I started publishing reviews on the EN World News site over two years ago, and it has been – and continues to be – a wonderful experience, offering me a great opportunity to check out many new role-playing games, board games, and other gaming products being produced by both major publishing companies and indie presses.

But even before becoming the EN World Reviewer, I had been doing gaming product reviews and articles for almost a year and a half prior to that.  But even when I was just reviewing gaming products for my own Neuroglyph Games site, I had the support of Russell Morrissey, the founder of EN World.  Many of my articles and reviews had the honor of being cross-linked to the front page of EN World News, sending interested Readers over to take a look at my blogs.  And I was not alone here – many other independent game bloggers have had the quiet support of EN World News, with the RPG and board game fans following links to their articles and blogs over the years, making EN World a true online focal point for the game community.

And not only has EN World supported the gaming blogosphere, it has provided a massive forum for the sharing of news, opinions, and support for the gaming community.  And year after year, the site has branched out into many more ways to promote gaming: through support of gaming product lines, online Play by Mail opportunities, and even a player database allowing gamers to find one another in their local area!

Sadly, as many of you know, EN World News was hacked a few weeks ago and brought down in what is now called The Great Breach of 2012.  And while the site data had been backed up and was saved, the structure and programming which made EN World News work as it did was lost – and with the hacking attack, much of the functionality of the site was irrevocably damaged.

But I am really happy to see that the Kickstarter to fund the Rebuilding of EN World has already met with what can only be called AMAZING success!!!  Setting up a rather modest goal for £300 in funds to hire a programmer to modify the out-of-the-box code for EN World to return to its old functionality, the online RPG gaming community has risen to this financial call to arms with unmatched fervor!  As of the posting of this blog, more than £12,000 have already been raised, and Mr. Morrissey has added a TON of more projects as Stretch Goals for the Kickstarter.  Right now, for donating £25 (or about $40 US), there is well over a 100 bux in PDF products that will be rewarded:

  • TOURNAMENTS, FAIRS, & TAVERNS for the Pathfinder RPG
  • Admiral o’ The High Seas for Pathfinder and D&D 4th Edition
  • War of the Burning Sky 700-page compiled for D&D 3.5
  • Five ZEITGEIST adventure path adventures for Pathfinder or 4E (your choice)
  • What’s the Pirate Ship Like, Anyway?  from Raging Swan Press
  • Villainous Pirates from Raging Swan Press
  • Wild Spellcraft for the Pathfinder RPG
  • The Town of Kalas and the Castles & Crusades Quickstart Rules from Troll Lord Games [also please see Troll Lord's own Kickstarter, which is awesome, too!]
  • NEW! Plus the Borderland Keep Deluxe 3D paper terrain models from Fat Dragon Games and A0: Crows Nest Island from Adventureaweek.com (both pictured above, added after the big image below was made).
  • NEW! Plus the Darklight 4E Bundle pictured below – adventures, amps,a and a sourccebook!

And it looks like the Rewards for the Stretch Goals will keep coming!

I’m really heartened to see my fellow gamers rally around Kickstarter to Rebuild EN World, with the knowledge that their donations will make the site not only more secure from hackers.  But beyond that, this Kickstarter project will make sure that EN World News remains a shining bastion online for promoting all forms of tabletop gaming, and to continue to nurture the hobby for future generations of gamers!

So check out the Kickstarter to Rebuild EN World, and take an opportunity to support a great legacy of the gaming community, and one of the nest online resources for gamers around the world!

So until next blog… I wish you Happy Gaming!
