What a Week: GENCON 2014 Open Pre-Registration Begins – D&D 40th Anniversary!

gencon wotc logosThis past Sunday was quite a day for RPG fans for a couple of very good reasons.

First off, pre-registration has finally begun for this year’s GENCON yesterday!  For those who plan to attend The Best Four Days of Gaming this August, you can get signed up to get your badge at the Official GENCON 2014 website.  And if anyone has any trouble signing up using the GENCON site, there is a handy video presentation explaining how to get pre-registered:

It should be noted that reservations of hotel rooms for GENCON 2014 can be had tomorrow, on January 27th.  So it’s a good idea to get your pre-registration in early to ensure you can get a decent room at the convention before they run out!

I’m really looking forward to heading to GENCON 2014 myself this year, as I really missed not attending last year in August.  I did have a great trip to Virginia and Washington DC as an end to my summer, so I can’t complain too much, but “if absence makes the heart grow fonder” then I am very fond of the idea of a trip to Indianapolis and GENCON this summer.

Of course, for fantasy role-players, one of the big events GENCON 2014 will likely be the unveiling of the new edition of Dungeons & Dragons (5E).  Of course, they might release the game earlier in the summer, but even still, there is almost certain to be a huge display of the newest edition of D&D along with demos, new novels, and other products at the Wizards of the Coast booth.  I imagine there will be a lot of cross-platform media tie-ins, much like WotC did for the release of Neverwinter for 4E at GENCON 2012.  I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of the new game, for obvious reasons, and I can promise that there will be an EN World review as soon as I can write it!

And speaking of EN World News, Russell Morrissey found a great blog by Jon Peterson regarding the 40th Anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons.  Over at the Playing at the World blogsite, Jon posted a blog in December, reckoning that January 26 of 2014 would be the exact day of the 40th Anniversary of D&D’s release back in 1974.  It’s a great write-up, with a timeline of events from 1973 to 1975, with quotes and excerpts from those days.

So January 26th was indeed a noteworthy date this year for the gaming community.  With so much anticipation surrounding GENCON and the release of D&D Next, it seems only fitting that the Fates conspire to make yesterday an extra-special day for fans of RPGs – and Dungeons & Dragons, in particular.

So until next blog… I wish you Happy Gaming!
